So I'm moving. In less than two months, I leave Ohio for Seattle, which is like trying to row across the Pacific (yeah, I know, it's actually been done according to anthropologists). As a process moving is typically done one of two ways: by hiring a large company or getting a big U-Haul and attempting to take all of your stuff across the country piece by piece, or by getting rid of everything but the bare necessities.
Im choosing B.
In the process of this, Ive had a lot of books that Ive accumulated throughout time. I mean lots and lots of books. Oddles. Tons. Literary detritus that I cant bear to throw but has to go.
So I tried an experiment: Half.com. I hadnt used Half.com for anything, and wanted to figure out if it would be possible to try to get rid of a lot of my books that way, relatively hassle-free.
Adding my books to Half.com was easy. I had to sign up as a seller on Half.com, which just required a credit card and checking account information (but no charge to either one). From there Half.com has made it very easy to sell books: I just had to enter in the ISBN number for each title I was going to sell, describe its condition, and then set a price on the book. The whole process takes around a minute per item.
So today, at around 2 pm, I added 6 books to Half.coms roster. These were small little paperbacks that I had decided to chuck or sell, and so I listed these as an experiment in Half.coms effectiveness.
How well did it work? Well. Right now its 5:47, and at 4:06 and 4:21, not one but two of my six books sold. Thats right. 6 books, bound for the trash, are now heading the post office and into the hands of people I will never meet, and while Im not going to be rolling in the dough from it, the books havent gone to waste and I am able to make a little bit of cash during the process of ridding my apartment of literary and technical waste.
Thanks.
